HEPA stands for "High Efficiency Particulate Air". This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 µm. The diameter specification of 0.3 microns responds to the worst case i.e. the most penetrating particle size (MPPS).

Panel filters are generally used to retain particles ranging from 3µ to 50µ. These are also known as primary filter in a typical HVAC system and are ideally installed in the suction area which forces them to work under negative pressure. Primary filters are moisture repellent and contains high dust holding capacity, so they are directly exposed to atmosphere and act as shield for secondary (HEPA) filters.
